Investigation Summary

An employee was working in a physicians' office. The office was a medical group practice. She was a physician. She was a medical education preceptor and family practice doctor who specialized in obstetrics. Her last day at work was on December 31, 2020. She called her primary care provider that same day complaining of diarrhea and fatigue. She was admitted to a hospital run by her employer on January 1, 2021. She was sent to the intensive care unit (ICU) with a diagnosis of COVID-19-related pneumonia, septic shock, and respiratory failure. She was intubated at that time. At 9:00 a.m. on January 19, 2021, she died of complications from COVID-19. Her death was reported to her employer that same day. Her primary job duties were obstetric and gynecologic care of patients at a family practice. None of the patients she saw and cared for directly at the family practice had tested positive prior to their exams. None of those patients had followed up with the practice for any care related to COVID-19. No other employee at the family practice has tested positive for COVID-19 or provided direct care to COVID-19 patients. She was, though, exposed to residents who worked with COVID-19 positive patients.
