Investigation Summary
An employee was working as a respiratory therapist at a hospital and completed his work shift and went home. The next day, December 24, 2020, the employee began to experience COVID-19 related symptoms including a scratchy throat. The employee went to the emergency department and received a COVID-19 nasal swab, flu-swab, and strep swab on December 25, 2020. On the same day, the employee began to experience a fever of 102 degrees. The test results for COVID-19, flu, and strep were all confirmed to be negative on December 26, 2020. On December 28, 2020, the hospital's employee health department conducted an exposure analysis and did not identify any employees who had significant exposure to the employee. The employee continued to feel worse with increased symptoms including body aches and decided to get tested for COVID-19 at a medical center on December 29, 2020. On December 30, 2020, the employee reported to his manager that he had received a positive COVID-19 test result. On the same day, the employee was monitoring his blood oxygen saturation levels and noticed it had dropped to 88 percent and had his spouse take him to the hospital for treatment. The employee was admitted and was hospitalized due to COVID-19 related symptoms, including shortness of breath. The employee was discharged on January 10, 2021.
