EMPLOYEES DRILLING HOLES IN CLIFF STRUCK BY FALLING ROCKS

EMPLOYEES #1 AND #2 WERE WORKING FROM A PLATFORM 125 TO 150 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL, DRILLING HOLES IN THE ROCKY SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN. APPROXIMATELY ONE TON OF ROCKS, JARRED LOOSE FROM THE MOUNTAINSIDE ABOUT 75 FEET ABOVE THE EMPLOYEES, FELL AND STRUCK THE UNPROTECTED EMPLOYEES. THE WORK (SKIP) PLATFORM HAD BEEN DESIGNED BY THE COMPANY ENGINEER ESPECIALLY FOR USE ON THIS PARTICULAR JOB. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH A HAIR-LINE CRACK OF THE PELVIS AND A RUPTURED KIDNEY. THE KIDNEY WAS REMOVED. EMPLOYEE #2 RECEIVED MINOR BRUISES TO THE RIGHT ARM. SCALING OR REMOVING THE LOOSE ROCK IN CONJUNCTION WITH OVERHEAD PROTECTION WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS ACCIDENT.
