Investigation Summary
The employer is a food processing and packaging company and for about 6 weeks in late April to early June the annual cherry harvest occurs. The employer has a purpose-built cherry packing facility that is only used during these weeks. Two shifts are run daily each with approximately 500 workers spread out over three processing lines. The only ventilation into the building is through the large main doors. Large fans circulate the air. All employees were equipped with a face mask, apron and gloves for food safety requirements to include before the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a large COVID-19 outbreak at the facility with 175 associated cases within a few weeks. One employee died on June 8, 2020, and seven employees were hospitalized over the following week.
