Investigation Summary
An employee was working as a corrections officer in a prison and was on vacation when he began to develop symptoms of COVID-19 on September 8, 2020. On September 4, during an overnight shift, the employee was talking with three inmates, one of which was within six feet. The inmates were not wearing face coverings and the employee was not wearing gloves or eye protection. At the time, the pod was not yet quarantined as a COVID-19 pod. However, on September 9, the pod was quarantined and from September 3-15, 55 inmates tested positive for COVID-19. The employee tested positive on September 12, was admitted to the hospital on September 20, and died at 4:00 a.m. on September 24,2020, from COVID-19 complications.
