Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14460117
Event: 04/01/1984
Employee injured in fall from balcony

Employee #1, a mason-tender, was pushing a rubber-tired, construction-type wheelbarrow loaded with wet mortar on the third floor concrete balcony of a building under construction. The 4 ft 6 in. wide by 83 ft long balcony was 27 ft 8 in. above the ground and unguarded on its east and north sides. As Employee #1 attempted to turn left into a 41 in. wide corridor and at the same time push the wheelbarrow up a 3 3/4 in. ramp. As the floor changed elevation, he lost control of the wheelbarrow and fell from the open side of the balcony to the ground, which was littered with pieces of broken masonry blocks. Employee #1 suffered a fractured skull and ribs, and multiple abrasions and lacerations. He had worked for this contractor as a mason tender for 7 weeks.
