Employee with COVID-19 infection dies

An employee worked as a Respiratory Therapist at an acute care facility. The employee routinely performed duties including procedures that generated aerosols from patients. On July 22, 2020, the employee tested positive for COVID-19 and was hospitalized the same day. The employee had not been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 patient since the end of March. The employee began to experience symptoms approximately 4 months after the last confirmed contact with a patient known to have COVID-19. The source of the employee's exposure in unknown. The employee's respiratory symptoms were consistent with COVID-19. The employee was asymptomatic on her last day of work at which time she was in close contact with a coworker without wearing respiratory protection. The employer did not have Adequate Aerosol Transmissible Diseases policies and procedures in place.
