Investigation Summary

Event: 07/07/2020
Employee is killed when sawmill chain conveyor starts up

At 5:15 p.m. on July 7, 2020, an employee was working at a sawmill. He was placing sticks on stacks of lumber that were stacked by the stacker machine, when it started to rain. A coworker stopped the machine and said to the employee that they should both go to a shed. The employee stayed behind on a platform by an electrical disconnect panel near the platform stairs. After everyone else had left the area, the employee climbed down under an unscrambler through an opening by the disconnect panel. The employee then sat on a chain conveyor. When the rain stopped, the other workers began to return to the stacker. One of them started the machine again. The employee was still sitting on the conveyor when the machine came on. The conveyor pulled the employee against the back of the machine. He suffered multiple fractures. He died from the injuries he received.
