Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 126163.015
Event: 05/09/2020
Employee infected with COVID-19 dies

An employee was working at a nursing care or skilled nursing facility. She was a licensed practical (LP) nurse working in a nursing home. She had worked there for over 13 years. She coordinated and supported the activities of the certified nurse assistants and actively participated in the care of the residents. Her last day at work was April 24, 2020. On April 27, 2020, she reported via telephone to her supervisor that she had a sore throat. On April 28, 2020, she reported cold-like symptoms and a low-grade fever of 37.6 degrees C (99.6 degrees F). On April 30, 2020, she tested positive for COVID-19. The COVID-19 test was administered by her employer. On May 9, 2020, she died. This was an OSHA-covered fatality. As of her last day at work, April 24, 2020, there were no suspected or confirmed COVID-19-infected residents of the home. When the employer called to report the fatality, on May 15, 2020, he mentioned that two patients that the employee had contact with, prior to her last day at work, were identified to have a fever on April 25, 2020, the day after the employee's last day at work. Those patients subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.
