Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 130663.015
Event: 05/07/2020
Employee with COVID-19 infection dies

An employee worked for a skilled nursing facility. The employee had been off-work and scheduled to return on Monday, March 30, 2020. Prior to his work shift, the employee called off work stating he was not feeling well. The employee's job duties included non-medical, one-on-one interaction with residents in the facility. On March 30, 2020, the employee reported to the hospital where he was admitted. The employee tested positive for COVID-19 and remained hospitalized until April 15, 2020 at which time he appeared to be trending toward better health and refused additional medical services. On that same date, the employee died from potential COVID-19 related pneumonia, complicated by prostate cancer and his refusal to accept additional treatment. The employee was reported to have had direct contact with confirmed or suspected individuals who were infected with COVID-19. The employer did not have an adequate respiratory protection program in place.
