Employee Is Burned By Steam Changing Expansion Joint

At approximately 8:45 a.m. on June 4, 2019, an employee was working under a heat exchange makeup air fan E48-0938 to replace a 1-inch diameter expansion joint. A coworker was on the outside of the unit handing tools to the employee. After r emoving the old expansion joint around 10 minutes had elapsed. Prior to affixing the new expansion joint, steam was propelled from inside the unit onto the empl oyee. The coworker assisted the employee to the first aid area, where he was lat er airlifted to the hospital. The employee received first and second degree burn s to the neck, upper body, and abdomen. The employee was hospitalized for treatm ent.
