Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 115912.015
Event: 04/24/2019
Employee sustains chemical burns to face and chest

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on April 24, 2019, an employee was preparing a 1:1 HNO3 in a 1000ml flask in a fume hood. The employee was working in a laboratory and poured a 1:1 HNO3 (nitric acid) out of a 1000ml flask into a 4-liter reagent bottle inside a fume hood. While transferring the 1:1 NHO3 into the 4-liter reagent bottle, the neck of the 1000ml flask broke splashing HNO3 onto the employee's chest and face resulting in chemical burns to the chest and face. The employee sustained chemical burns to the chest and face and was transported to the emergency room for treatment for burns and kept for observation due to possible inhalation of nitric acid.
