Investigation Summary
At 7:55 a.m. on September 22, 2018, nine employees were working in a commercial building to install plumbing and drywall. Employee #1 was performing supervisory duties, Employee #2 was operating a propane powered saw (EDCO 552025P) to cut the concrete floor in preparation to install plumbing and Employees #3-9 were installing drywall. Employee #2 operated the saw from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. and again at 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. using a loading dock door as ventilation for the room (39,875 cubic feet volume of the room) while the air conditioning system continued to recirculate air from the area. Employees #3-9 first reported symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) exposures at 7:55 a.m. and the area was evacuated and Emergency Medical Service (EMS/911) was called at 8:08 a.m. Responding EMS provided on-site treatment and transported seven of the nine employees to local hospitals for further treatment. While on-scene (approximately 8:14 a.m.), EMS measured the CO concentration in the room at approximately 200 ppm. Two other employees transported themselves, after initially refusing transport, to a local hospital for treatment. All employees received treatment for CO exposure at the hospital and released the same day.
