Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170832125
Event: 05/06/1997
Employee's finger amputated when caught in ram of press

Employee #1 was operating a press for a manufacturer of portable power tools. Before starting the press, she sat down and placed her left hand on the upper portion of the press (referred to as the "banjo area"), to steady and support herself. There was an approximately 3 5/8 in. opening between the steel plate supporting the drive ram and the stationary portion of the press. When Employee #1 activated the machine, the ram retracted, pinning three of her left-hand fingers against the press. She was taken to the hospital for treatment, and returned there the next day to have her index finger amputated at the first knuckle. The two-hand control and all functions of the press were in safe condition when tested by the employer and by the manufacturer.
