Employee injured after striking tool in trench cave-in

Employee #1 was helping to install a new natural gas line in a 9 ft 9 in. wide by 4 ft deep by 15 ft 10 in. long excavation. He was using a butt fuser to install a pipe reducer. Employee #1 was positioned with the butt fuser in front of him and the trench wall at his back when, according to witnesses, the wall blew out and struck him from behind. He was knocked into the butt fuser and dirt was piped up his back, although he was never completely covered. He sustained injuries from his collision with the butt fuser.
