Employee Suffers Burns From Pressurized Hot Water

At approximately 7:50 a.m. on February 14, 2002, Employee #1 and a coworker were trying to unclog a hot water pipe carrying water at 180 degrees Fahrenheit, and at a pressure between 60 PSI and 80 PSI, located in the attic of Life Sciences Building. Employee #1 did not shut down the main water system. Employee #1 turned off the valve at the attic and slightly pierced the pipe that connected the hot water line to the heating coils. Employee #1 did not notice any flow. Then Employee #1 cut the pipe below the valve, and noticed no water again. Employee #1 realized that the sedimentation blockage was located above the valve. Employee #1 then turned the valve on to insert a piece of cement tile wire into the pipe to dislodge the sedimentation. Hot water was splashed out and Employee #1 sustained second-and-third-degree burns to his face and right upper arm. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
