Investigation Summary
On July 10, 2008, Employee #1, a painter, started working at 6:00 a.m. in the location in Los Angeles, California. His work primarily involved touch up painting on door frames, walls and other areas, as needed, inside on one of the units of a newly constructed apartment complex. According to what Employee #1 said, the paint used in these activities was water-based. Employee #1 was performing this type of work throughout the day and remembered that he was sweating profusely. He remembered that in order to cool down himself, he soaked a rag with water and applied it to his neck. He took his first break at 9:30 a.m. for 20 minutes and then took his lunch time break at 12:30 p.m. for 30 minutes. After lunch, he went back to work performing the same tasks up to the completion of his shift. At 2:30 p.m., he went down to the parking lot to organize his tool box in preparation of going home. Suddenly, he felt dizzy and fell. Paramedics were summoned immediately, and Employee #1 was transported to a nearby hospital, where he stayed for two days. Employee #1 was diagnosed with syncope and collapse, heat exhaustion, excessive heat and dehydration.
