Mechanic's Finger Is Amputated When Caught in Pulley

At approximately 8:15 a.m. on January 5, 2012, Employee #1, a bus mechanic with the Los Angeles Unified School District, was using a saw with an abrasive disc to cut metal pipe. His gloved left hand contacted the disc and drew his hand into the saw's belt and pulley, which were only partially guarded. Employee #1's glove and fingers became entangled in the belt and pulley, resulting in the amputation of his small and ring fingers. The employer had failed to train Employee #1 and provide proper machine guards.
