Investigation Summary
On July 24, 2008, Employee #1, a truck driver, was working in the field, in the ranch area Number 24, in a vineyard located in Edison, California. He started his work at about 6:00 a.m. Employee #1 was driving a truck to pick up finished trays of grapes and to deliver the trays to the packing shed. The company packing shed was located approximately 1.5 miles from the field. Employee #1 and a coworker, a switcher, were loading the trays by hands. The official temperature was 99 degrees Fahrenheit and 26 percent relative humidity. Employee #1 felt ill between 5:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. He was transported to the company approved clinic for treatment. Then he was transferred to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, where he was hospitalized.
