Investigation Summary
On December 12, 2001, Employee #1 and a coworker were in the process of bringing a load of drywall, consisting of about 16 sets of drywall sheets (two to a set), into Building 410 at the Northrup Grumman facility. The two employees loaded the drywall on a board cart and pushed the cart from a location outside of the building. Employee #1 was located at the back of the cart and his coworker was located at the front. Employee #1 was pushing and holding the load of drywall with one hand, and his coworker was pulling the cart with one hand and holding the load of drywall with the other hand. As the two employees approached the entrance to the building, they stopped and lined up the cart to enter the building. As soon as the front wheels hit the area where the asphalt and concrete strip met along the entrance to the building, the load started to spill. The ground in this area was slightly sloped, chipped, and the surface was uneven. The two employees observed two women walking out of the building through this doorway at the same time as the load started to fall. Employee #1 was trying to keep the load from falling because he thought it would hit the women. The load continued to fall, and the women were in the clear. However, Employee #1 was hit by the drywall and knocked to the ground. His left leg was pinned under the drywall sheets. His coworker tried to lift the drywall but was unable to and called for assistance. Another employee came over, and the two of them lifted the drywall off Employee #1's leg. Paramedics were called and Employee #1 was taken by helicopter to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was hospitalized for 12 days. Employee #1 had surgery on his left ankle, which was shattered with a compound fracture. He also suffered injuries to the lower back, left forearm, and right leg.
