Investigation Summary
On July 20, 2005, an employee was assigned to clean up packing materials during construction operations at a gas station construction site. At the time of the incident, the employee was cutting two 2-ft by 4-ft board at the same time, holding them together with his left hand and laying them across his left leg. The employee was not using a sawhorse or any other equipment to brace the wood. During the process, the employee cut off the second and third digits of his left hand. A coworker, who was working in the general vicinity supplying wood for the employee to cut, did not see the incident, but was first to respond. The coworker took off one of his shoelaces and tied it around the remaining portions of the employee's fingers. The emergency medical services were called. The employee was taken by ambulance to Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City where he was admitted for treatment for his amputation. The investigation revealed that the employee had not been trained on the hazards of using a portable power driven circular hand saw prior to the incident.
