Employee amputates hand while using table saw

At approximately 7:50 a.m. on July 9, 2003, an employee who was a saw operator was working on a SCMI Circular Table Saw, Model Number SI 16 N, located in the cutting area. He was replacing the blade and making measurements. At the time of the accident, the employee needed to take measurements for a different cut. Therefore, he turned off the saw, which had two different blades. The smaller blade stopped, however the larger one was still running. The employee lifted a hood guard which covered the larger blade into a vertical position. While waiting for the blade to stop, the employee proceeded to take measurements. At this time, due to vibrations, the guard came down on his left hand, and the running blade made contact with his thumb, resulting in an amputation. He was transported to a local clinic, and later to Western Hand Center, where he was treated and released.
