Event: 04/29/2000
Employee's thumb amputated by falling wire spool

At approximately 7:20 a.m. on April 29, 2000, Employee #1 was stringing up wire at a vineyard in Avenal, CA. He was trying to move a 100 lb spool of wire from the top of a stack of four spools when the top one fell on his right thumb, amputating it to the first joint. He was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released. Employee #1 had been told that two people were required to lift the spools, but he decided to attempt the move alone.
