Employee's eye lacerated by tree branch

At approximately 2:45 p.m. on May 18, 1998, Employee #1 and eight coworkers, of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, were cutting weeds and tree branches in Pico Rivera, CA. Employee #1 was lacerated near his right eye when it was accidentally struck by a tree branch. He was transported to USC Medical Center, where his injury was sutured; he returned to work, with modified duties. According to the employer, Employee #1 was not wearing the safety goggles given to him, a violation of the its safety policy.
