Investigation Summary
On August 17, 2007, Employee #1, a meat cutter, was cutting flanken ribs on a meat saw to fill the service case of a grocery store. The meat saw was a Lasar Mfg Co Inc Butcher Boy Electric Meat Band Saw (Model Number B1435s, Serial Number 904S145), and the stock was no greater than 6 in. deep and 2 in. high. The employee had adjusted the thickness gauge plate to .75 in. and had cut three steaks off of the stock. While cutting the fourth steak, he reached around the back of the Meat Saw blade, with his left hand, to guide the cut piece so it would not become bound up in the saw. He placed his index finger too close to the moving blade. The finger tip was amputated on the portion of the saw above the stock and below the adjustable guard. The employee was taken by ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was treated and released. Employee #1 was not hospitalized. A coworker stated that the adjustable guard was found to be adjusted to at least 2 in. above the top of the stock.
