Employee Suffers Amputation Of Finger Tip

Employee #1 is employed as a "3 knife" operator by a company that produces small books for themselves and other companies. Employee #1's task the day of the accident was to remove books from a short conveyor at the end of the machine. The conveyor was driven by a chain and sprocket drive. Prior to the accident the machine operator had removed a guard that protected the drive for purposes of adjusting it. When Employee #1 reached for some books he got his finger caught in the chain nip point and received a wound that resulted in the amputation of his left middle finger tip. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
