Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201796810
Event: 02/11/2003
Employee pinned under falling pipes and injured

At approximately 2:10 p.m. on February 11, 2003, Employee #1, a fitter for Craneyour, was transporting four steel pipes on a shop-made cart from the yard into the shop to drill holes in them. The pipes were each 18 ft 1 in. in length and weighed approximately 600 lbs. each. Employee #1 positioned the cart under a shop overhead crane and proceeded to rig the pipes for a lift to move them to the other end of the shop where drilling takes place. He tied the first sling around the pipes with some slack left on the sling. He was about to rig the second sling when the cart and the pipes on it tipped over, pining him against the concrete floor. Employee #1 sustained a crushing injury to his right leg. He was transported to LA County USC Trauma Center. He was hospitalized and treated for fractures.
