Investigation Summary
At approximately 2:20 p.m. on February 2, 2001, Employee #1, a 20-year veteran wood cutter for a furniture manufacturer, lost part of his ring, middle, and index fingers on his left hand while using a table saw. His supervisor was at the site when the incident occurred. The doctor's report indicated that Employee #1 cut the ring, middle, and index fingers on his left hand. Employee #1 was using a ripsaw, a Delta 10-inch contractor's table saw. The Serial Number was 92C26025. At the time of the incident, Employee #1 was ripping pieces of oak molding. Employee #1 was transported by car to the Western Hand Center in Downey, California. During an interview, Employee #1 stated that he was using a push stick with his right hand and guiding and holding down the wood with his left hand. Because the wood was very hard (oak) and because the saw lacked a spreader and an anti-kickback device, the work piece flew up taking his left hand across the blade. The saw did not have a hood guard. Even though his supervisor did not witness the accident, he did offer assistance after the injury and was able to provide information about the work conditions before and after the incident. His employer failed to provide a hood guard on the saw.
