Employee Injures Finger When it Is Caught Under Steel Pipe

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on August 25, 2002, Employee #1 was moving a 10-ft-long by 2-in.-diameter steel casting pipe that was wedged in a 2.5 in. to 3.5-in. space between the 8- ft-diameter by 30.5-in. lead kettle and the 10.5 ft by 42-in. by 33-in. hog mold. He lifted the 80 lb pipe from the wedged end while a coworker lifted it from the handled end. They were placing the steel pipe on the hog mold when Employee #1's left little finger became caught underneath it. He pulled his finger from under the pipe, but when he took off his glove, he found that his finger was fractured and had been nearly amputated. Another coworker took Employee #1 to US Healthworks for treatment. He was then transported to the Western Hand Center, where he was treated and released.
