Employee's fingers amputated by a band saw

At about 9:30 a.m. on September 8, 1999, Employee #1, a fish cutter, was involved in an accident while operating a band saw. The employer is involved in the processing of seafood products using several band saws, and knives. The machine involved in the accident was the band saw Serial Number LHS69, 2299, manufactured by AEW Engineering CULDA. Saw was 8 in. from top of the blade to the table, and 0.5 in. wide. Fish measured 5.5 in. wide, 1 in. thick and 2.4 ft long. On the day of the accident he started to work at 7:00 a.m. He finished his first work order at about 8:55 a.m. At 9:00 a.m. he started to cut Halibut collars. At about 9:05 a.m. he suddenly felt that the blade pulled his right hand in. Quickly, he pulled his hand out. He thought that he had suffered only a small laceration. Then he realized that his right index and middle fingers were severed. After the accident he was transported to Stacy Medical Center. From there he was referred to County USC where his fingers were re-attached. He was hospitalized at County USC for three days. As of the date of the interview, he had not regained full strength of his fingers, and had limited sense of feeling and motion.
