Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201053659
Event: 06/05/2000
Employee's thumb fractured by falling wheel rim

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on June 5, 2000, Employee #1 was working in the stock/return department of DNA Specialty, Inc., a producer of wire wheels for passenger cars. He was cleaning a wheel on an assembly table when the spinning rim overturned and fell off the table and struck Employee #1's right thumb. He suffered an intra-articular fracture to the first metacarpal joint and was transported to Crenshaw Medical Group for immediate care. He later received further treatment by a physician at another location. Subsequent investigation determined that the wheel rim was not secured to the working assembly table during cleaning to prevent it from overturning. The employer was cited for a general violation of T9CCR 3328(e), for not having the rim secured to the assembly table during the cleaning process .The employer assembles approximately 15,000 wire wheels per day.
