Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201111564
Event: 01/11/1999
Finger Amputated While Using A Saw To Make A Cabinet

On January 11, 1999, Employee #1, a cabinet maker, lost his ring finger on his left hand at the first joint while using a saw to make a cabinet. The incident occurred in woodworking shop number three of Artcrafter Cabinets. He was using a 12-inch Delta table saw to cut a 0.875-inch piece of laminate. He removed the table saws "fence" over to the width of the cut which resulted in the blade guard to rest on top of the fence above the material being cut. He was using a push stick, but the width of the fence was so close to the material and the push stick was not able to push the material all the way through the cut. Employee #1 thought the material was stuck. So, he reached past the guard to try and pull the material the rest of the way through. As he raised the material, it became caught on the blade. His hand was pulled into the blade under the guard. As a result, he had lacerations on two fingers, and his ring finger on his left hand was severed at the first joint. He was taken to Encino Tarzana Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment.
