Investigation Summary
Riverwalk golf club is a full service golf course with a large maintenance crew. Two maintenance employees, Employee #1 and a coworker, were fixing a leak on a Briggs and Stratton commercial lawnmower. They had the mower on a work table located approximately 3-to-4-feet off the ground. They completed the leak repair, and then wanted to see if it would leak some more. This required that the mower be started. Leaving it on the table, the coworker told Employee #1 to stand back, and he started the mower. Inadvertently, the coworker released the clutch, and the mower started to move. Employee #1, seeing that the mower was about to fall off the table, instinctively reached palms up to grab the mower. Employee #1 placed his right hand underneath the mower where the blades were moving. This caused his index and middle fingers to be amputated up to the distal phalange. Employee #1 was taken to the University of California San Diego Hospital for treatment and was hospitalized.
