Investigation Summary
An employee was injured while working at his work bench in the employer's shop. At the time of the accident, the employee was working at his bench with a 32-caliber semi-automatic pistol. His job was to fabricate an order for after-market magazines for the weapon. The employee was testing the magazine for proper function in the pistol. He was having a problem with rounds hanging and not ejecting properly. The employee stated that there were only supposed to be dummy rounds in the magazine. The employee stated that he was trying to close the pistol slide and as he did so he was holding the pistol in his hands with the barrel pointed at himself. The employee stated that as he was trying to close the pistol slide, the weapon discharged even though he did not have his finger on the trigger. The employee sustained a left chest wound, next to his heart. Other employees came to his aid when they heard the gun shot and paramedics responded to the call. The employee was taken to University of California, San Diego Medical Center of San Diego and hospitalized. There is only one safety, a standard safe switch on the pistol.
