Employee Amputates Finger in Jointer

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on September 22, 2005, an employee, a production laborer, was performing an edge jointing operation on an 8-in. jointer, Delta DJ 20, Model Number 37-350, Serial Number 3269. The workpiece that was being edge-jointed measured 84.5-in long, by 3.56-in. high. It was lower than the fence. The bottom side of the workpiece measured at 1.25-in. wide. The top side of the workpiece measured at 0.75-in. wide. The employee was to remove 0.062-in. off the bottom side of the workpiece along its entire length. At the time of the accident, the table opening for the cutterhead was between 3.125-in. and 3.5-in. wide, that was approximately 2-in. wider than the material. Approximately 35 in. of the workpiece was edged-jointed when the employee's hand slipped off the piece and contacted the jointer's cutterhead. He sustained a partial amputation of his right fourth finger with 5-mm bone loss. The employee was transported to U S Healthworks in Riverside where he was hospitalized.
