Employee Is Struck by Falling Object and Amputates Toes

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on March 30, 2006, Employee #1 was pulling the bearings from the railroad wheel axles with a Bearing Puller machine, weighing approximately 1,144 pounds. The puller machine was suspended with a hook attached to the steel wire rope of a "YALE" overhead hoist crane with a capacity of one ton. As Employee #1 pulled off the bearing, it dropped off the puller housing and the hoist rope suddenly broke causing the puller machine to fall on his right foot. Employee #1 suffered serious amputation of his first, second and third right toes. Employee #1 also suffered serious crushing injuries to his right foot. Employee #1 was hospitalized for four days.
