Employee Gets Finger Amputated by Conveyor

At approximately 11:00 am, on January 24 2008, Employee #1 got the tip of her right index finger amputated while she was cleaning some material off of the end of the head pulley shaft of a conveyor. The conveyor was used to carry crumbs up into a hopper to feed for the pie shell maker that pressed cracker crumbs into forms for pie crust shell. Employee #1 saw some waste material on the end of the conveyor head pulley and reached up to clean away this material without stopping and unplugging the conveyor belt. When Employee #1 withdrew her hand, she observed that her right index finger was bleeding. She was initially treated and released by Corona Regional Hospital. Eight days after the accident she had outpatient surgery on her finger by an orthopedic specialist clinic. She lost the bone at the tip of her index finger.
