Investigation Summary
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 12, 2004, Employee #1, a team leader and Employee #2, 14-year old youth worker employed by the Glendale Youth Alliance, were brush clearing in Brand Park. Around 3:00 pm Employee #1 instructed the work crew to take a lunch break. During the lunch break, Employee#1 went to a certain area to see if any additional clearing needed to be done east of the current work site. During his inspection, Employee #1 visually observed some seeds on the ground. Employee#1 then proceeded to pick up the seed, remove the outer covering, and ingest the pulp inside. Employee #1 consumed two beans, gathered additional seeds and returned to the work crew. Employee #2 upon seeing the seeds, decided he wanted to taste them also. Employee#2 consumed a single seed at that time. Employee# 2 collected additional seeds for the rest of the work crew. Other members of the work crew tasted the seeds but spit them out. Employee #1 consumed approximately seven more seeds, and Employee #2 consumed approximately 12 seeds in total. Employee #1 went home, ate dinner and became violently ill around 8:00 pm. Employee #1 was taken to St. Joseph Hospital around 11:00 pm. Employee#1 was treated for "food poisoning" and released. Employee #2 went home, ate dinner and became violently ill around 8:00 p.m. Employee #2 is sick for the next five hours. Employee #2 is taken to Glendale Memorial around 1:00 am and stays for approximately 11 hours. Employee#2 then is transferred to White Memorial and is released 24 hours later. The Division was able to determine that Employee #1 and #2 consumed seeds from the Castor Bean Plant, growing wild in the park.
