Employee Fractures Both Legs in Fall from Ladder

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on August 5, 1998, an employee was descending a 56-ft aluminum date palm ladder. At 17-ft, the rungs broke and separated from the side rails. The employee fell from the ladder that was braced against a date palm and fractured his right leg. He was transported to the JFK Hospital, Indio, where orthopaedic surgery, inserting pins/screw, was performed on his legs. Additional surgeries were needed. The ladder rails had been repaired on both sides using plates/pop rivets, and the rungs were gouged. The ladder weight was 103 lbs. The employee weighed over 200 lbs, and his date saddle was about 30 lbs.
