Employee injured when loader crushed by gravel slide

Employee #1, a loader operator for a large sand and gravel quarry, was using a CAT 944C front end loader to remove gravel from a 500 ft hillside. The hill had an old slide area approximately 250 ft above the work area being excavated. Employee #1 was moving gravel when the first of two slides covered the loader bucket, immobilizing the equipment. A second slide caused gravel to pile up in front of the loader, breaking through the windshield that was 13 ft above the ground and crushing Employee #1. He was hospitalized for 12 days and, as of November 30, 1998, remained under treatment for internal injuries. Employee #1 had undercut the unbenched hillside below the slide area.
