Worker Dies in Fall from Weakened Overhead Beam

On October 27, 2006, an employee worked for a commercial painting contractor. The employee was painting decorative weathered overhead beams at a shopping center located in Bakersfield, California. He was working from a scissor lift, and for an undetermined reason climbed up on a weathered 4 in. by 8 in. beam. His weight caused it to break and he fell head first to the concrete sidewalk. He was taken to Kern Medical Center located in Bakersfield, California, for treatment, and died four days later.
