Investigation Summary
At approximately 12:00 p.m. on November 24, 2005, Employee #1 was working as a butcher in the meat department of a family-owned and operated retail grocery store. He was a regular employee of the employer. He was operating a Hobart Model Number 6614 meat cutting band saw, cutting a piece of meat into small strips. The saw's sliding guard was in the "up" position, leaving exposed a 2.75 inch-long section of the saw blade above the piece of meat. As Employee #1 cut the meat, the index finger of his left hand came into contact with the running saw blade. His left index finger was amputated. He was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio, CA, and he was released the same day. He was not hospitalized.
