Investigation Nr: 202441630
Event: 06/09/2005
Employee Is Burned When Sprayed with Chemical

At approximately 2:30 p.m. June 9, 2005, an employee was working for large chemical plant that recovered and processed commercial minerals from the dry lake beds in the area. The employee was unclogging some nozzles used in a process when pressure in the pipeline system sprayed the slurry of sodium carbonate monohydrate out of the drain valve with such a force that the employee was splashed with the hot material. The employee received first aid at the work site and was transferred from the Ridgecrest Region Hospital to the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, where he received 13 days of inpatient treatment for his injuries.
