Employee Suffers Amputation When Caught in Chain Sprocket

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on March 31, 2006, Employee #1 was working on an egg ranch where there are over a half million hens housed in a layer caged system. The machine involved in the accident is a poultry manure removal machine. It is a low profile six-wheel tractor with a large shovel (a square bucket) attached to it. Employee #1 was driving the manure scooper, a tractor, and discovered that the chain had come off the sprockets on the left side of the tractor. The chain loosens due to normal use and requires continuous adjustment. Employee #1, with the assistance of a coworker, repositioned the chain over the sprockets. While the chains were turning slowly, Employee #1 reached in to examine the tension on the chain. Employee #1's left hand got caught between the chain and a sprocket. Employee #1 sustained a partial amputation of his left second and third fingers and was hospitalized for four days.
