Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201071446
Event: 04/20/2007
Roofer Fractures Wrist in Fall from Ladder

At 9:41 a.m. on April 20, 2007, Employee #1 was working for a roofing contractor at a site in Santee, CA. The firm installs flat roofing materials for its clients, which are primarily residential jobs. Employee #1 and three coworkers had finished installing some flat roofing and were putting tarp material over it. All were employees of the employer. At the time of the accident, they were doing some tree work. Employee #1 was cutting a large limb off a tree. He was standing about 10 to 12 feet above the ground on a ladder he had propped against the tree. The tree limb was tied off with nylon rope that was being handled by the coworkers. Possibly the large branch moved toward him, but for some reason, Employee #1 lost his balance, fell off the ladder, and hit the ground, fracturing his right wrist. Emergency medical technicians transported Employee #1 by ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. He was hospitalized for about 24 hours mainly for observation and some tests. The site manager was not at the job site when the accident happened. Equipment and materials involved were a 16-foot Werner portable ladder, a Poulan Model Number P3314 chain saw, a section of nylon truck rope about 80-feet long, and a helmet.
