Employee Is Injured When Stuck by Furniture

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on April 2, 2006, Employee #1 was operating a Crownlift (Number 32) industrial truck, which was referred to as a stockpicker. He used a forklift to load and unload household furniture (e.g. mattress, cabinets, tables, chairs, etc.) into and from large metal racks three levels high from the ground. Employee #1 was operating the Crownlift down aisle 2, level B, bend 13 with two wooden dressers of different height, length, and width positioned on the platform. The dressers were to be positioned back to back on the platform section of the stockpicker. The Crownlift's platform was approximately 7.5 ft off the ground. Employee #1 was backing down the aisle to place the dressers on the rack. Employee heard the dresser hit the metal rack, causing the dresser to cascade forward toward the operator. The dresser leg was partially off the platform, while he was backed up, causing the dresser to get stuck between the rack and the platform. The dresser fell forward and pinned him between the steering wheel of the Crownlift and the dresser. The furniture hit Employee #1 mostly on the right side of his body, as his back was turned to the dresser, resulting in a bone chip on his right femur and injuring his lower back. Employee #1 was transported to a medical center via an ambulance. He was hospitalized for approximately three days.
