Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201069333
Event: 10/30/2005
Employee Injures Head When Ejected from Truck

At approximately 7:40 p.m. on October 30, 2005, Employee #1, a salesperson with Rancho Auto Group, a car dealership and auto service located in San Diego, CA, was driving a Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) 2005 EL (small battery powered electric truck, flatbed truck with front cab) on the company parking lot to get from one showroom to another. Employee #1 was the driver, and a coworker was the passenger. Employee #1 was turning the truck around by putting it in reverse. As Employee #1 backed up, he turned the wheel and the vehicle abruptly turned, which caused the tires to lose traction. When the tires regained traction, it caused the vehicle to jerk, ejecting Employee #1 from the vehicle. Employee #1 sustained severe head trauma. Employee #1 was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital by ambulance. He was treated for his serious head injuries. He was heavily sedated for his injuries and kept in the hospital for more than 24 hours. He was placed in a medically induced coma for days and received surgery for his injuries. Employee #1 was not wearing a seat belt while driving the vehicle. The passenger was wearing his seat belt during the incident and remained inside the vehicle.
