Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201069234
Event: 07/18/2005
Employee Suffers Heat Stroke and Collapses

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on July 18, 2005, Employee #1, a truck driver working for a window manufacturing and installation company suffered heat stroke while delivering windows and doors to a job site. Employee #1's job was to deliver approximately 50 windows and 14 sets of door frames to houses at the job site. Employee #1 left the factory at approximately 8:00 a.m. and arrived at the job site at approximately 11:30 a.m. Employee #1 had a cooler with water on his truck, but there was no working air conditioner in the truck, only a fan. At the job site the general contractor had let all the workers go early that day because of record high temperatures that were in excess of 115 degrees Fahrenheit that day. Employee #1 was unloading the vinyl frame windows from the flatbed truck and carrying them into a garage from approximately 12:30 p.m. to approximately 4:00 p.m. At approximately 4:30 p.m., two children called to a roofer working in the vicinity about a man lying in the road. Employee #1 was seen stumbling across the street carrying a window on his back, away from the construction project. Employee #1 had collapsed and was going into convulsions on the sidewalk when the roofer found him. The Superintendent was leaving at that time and he was called over by the roofer. Employee #1 was non-responsive and was taken to the hospital. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
