Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201069127
Event: 05/02/2005
Employee's Hand Is Amputated in Machine

At approximately 9:15 a.m. on May 2, 2005, Employee #1 was cleaning some hay off an accumulating table of the H and H Hunterwood machine with his right hand. The machine inadvertently moved and the accumulator arm came back and cut off part of his right hand at a shear point at the rotator arm. A coworker was working at the north side of the machine. The manager was working on the east side of the machine. Employee #1 applied a tourniquet and had part of his hand placed in a bag and onto some ice. Another coworker transported Employee #1 to El Centro Regional Medical Center, where it was determined that Employee #1 was to be taken by life flight to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego for surgery and treatment for seven days to reattach his right hand.
