Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170618003
Event: 10/30/1995
Employee's fingers amputated in table saw

Employee #1, an assembler in a furniture factory, needed about ten more pieces of drawer siding to complete an order. Because it was five minutes before quitting time, he went to the shop area to use a table saw to make the ten pieces himself. He apparently started to cut the 5 in. by 20 in. by 1/2 in. parts when his right hand became caught between the guard and the blade, amputating parts of two fingers. There were no witnesses to this accident. The saw was fully guarded, and Employee #1 had been told never to operate the table saws because he had not been trained in their use.
